Bicycle Accidents

Bicycle Safety Tips

  • Cyclists are required to obey the same rules as other motorists.
  • Cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic.
  • Wear reflective clothing.
  • Use a front light and reflectors or flashing lights.
  • Drivers must share the road with cyclists.
  • Don’t crowd a bicycle; allow at least three feet of clearance when passing a cyclist.
  • Watch for riders before opening a car door or proceeding into the roadway.
  • Yield to cyclists at intersections.
  • Use extra caution when turning at intersections; bicycles and motorists are often traveling at or near the same speed when turning at intersections.

The popularity of cycling has exploded in recent years, as adults increasingly turn to their bicycles for recreation, fitness and a convenient and healthy way to commute. However, the large number of bikes on the road has led to an increase in the number of serious or fatal bicycle accidents in Rhode Island and throughout the nation.

Rhode Island Injury Attorney Michael DelSignore is dedicated to fighting for the rights of cyclists throughout the state, including Warwick, Newport and Providence.

A total of 716 riders were killed in bicycle accidents in 2008, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. More than 52,000 were injured.

Motorists who ignore the rights of cyclists on the road are frequently responsible for causing serious or fatal bicycle accidents. And, while about one-seventh of all fatal bicycle accidents involve children, older adults are being seriously injured or killed in increasing numbers. The average age of cyclists killed in bicycle accidents has increased with the popularity of cycling for recreation and fitness, from 32 a decade ago to 41 in 2008, according to government statistics.

Safety advocates believe motorists have grown increasingly aggressive toward cyclists. Frequent hazards faced by bicyclists include being crowded out of a lane, cut-off at intersections and forced off the road. When a cyclist is injured by a negligent motorist, the rider can and should be compensated for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other damages.
